STEPS TO BECOMING A FULLY QUALIFIED LGV DRIVER

There are a number of things to be considered before starting the process to become a fully qualified LGV (large goods vehicle) driver.

AGE

The minimum age at which you can obtain an LGV licence is 18 years. Between 18 and 21, LGV drivers must hold an initial Driver CPC qualification (regardless of whether the licence is intended to be used professionally or otherwise). For drivers over 21 years of age, the Driver CPC qualification is only a necessity if the licence is being used professionally.

HEALTH

STEP ONE Before you apply for your provisional licence you will need to take a medical. This will be arranged by the Caldicot Group, which is your training provider. I will send you a medical examination report (Form D4), and book you a medical at a local medical centre. D4 Medicals are a Company that provide a cheaper service. (0300 3030668 or book online)

PROVISIONAL ENTITLEMENT

After passing your medical it will be time to apply for your provisional LGV entitlement.

STEP TWO Although application is free, you will need to fill in a Form D2, which I will send with your D4 form. Your completed application form should be sent to the DVLA at Swansea, accompanied by your completed D4 (medical form). The application form will also remind you to send your Photo card driving licence. Ensure that you read and complete the form carefully so as not to delay your application which will take between 10 to 14 days to process. This short delay will offer an ideal time to prepare for the theoretical parts of your test. There are several theoretical tests to pass in the licence acquisition process.

STEP THREE Once you have received your provisional licence, I will book your two-part theory test online (Modules 1a and 1b). I will also be able to book your Driver CPC Initial Case study test online at this stage. This test can be booked at a local DSA test centre.

THEORY TESTS

Module 1A. To pass the theory test (Module 1A) you are required to answer 100 multiple-choice questions. You must get at least 85 correct to be awarded a pass. The theory test exam lasts one hour and 45 minutes. The official ‘LGV Theory Test Book’ is highly recommended as an ideal learning tool: costs vary between £13 – £25 depending on provider.

Module 1B The Hazard Perception Test (Module 1B) consists of 20 hazard clips. You are required to identify potential hazards as and when they appear on the screen. The required pass mark is 67 out of 100.  If you fail the hazard perception test but have passed the theory test, then you only need to re-sit the hazard perception test, and vice versa. Once you have passed both parts of the LGV licence theory tests your certificate will be valid for two years from the date of passing the first part of the test. Case Study Theory Test (Driver CPC Module 2) The Driver Certificate of Professional Competence is a qualification that all LGV drivers must take to be able to drive commercially, and any LGV drivers under 21 years of age, regardless of vehicle use. This test must be sat at a DSA-approved Theory Test Centre. You will be asked a variety of questions with multiple choice answers.

The exam will use diagrams, video clips, text and audio to help illustrate the questions. Each test will consist of seven case studies and you will be asked six to eight questions per case study. You will need to study for these tests. I will give you a Login with all practice screens to help with your preparation, and I can monitor your progress from my Managers Portal.

PRACTICAL TESTS

STEP FOUR Module 3. (Practical Test) Is now broken down into 2 Modules, 3a & 3b. The 3a module is the off road exercise, (reversing, coupling & uncoupling for C+E candidates) The 3b test itself lasts approximately 60 minutes and takes in various different types of road. This is carried out by a Driving Standards Agency (DSA) examiner. Your on-road training will be here in Newport, where you will have 32 Hours driver training with a qualified LGV Instructor over 8 Days and your Test on the 8th day with a few hours training before your test. Courses will be booked in relation to Test Availability.

Module 4 (Practical Test Associated Knowledge) (Driver CPC) Module 4 is a separate practical test that lasts for approximately 30 minutes. It will normally be conducted after your practical driving test (Module 4). It is anticipated that approximately three hours of training will be required to prepare adequately for this exam. The DSA examiner will ask certain questions about vehicle and load, safety and security. You must demonstrate your answers using a vehicle and various restraining devices. For example, part of the Module 4 test might be to carry out a pre-use vehicle check or demonstrate how you would secure a load using various restraining devices. The pass mark for Module 4 is 80%. However, you must get at least 75% in each subject area (five areas) to ensure success. Once you have passed Module 4 you will be awarded a Driver CPC qualification and can drive professionally. This will be valid for five years. You must then complete 35 hours periodic training within those five years and every five years thereafter. Congratulations. You are now a qualified LGV driver with a Category C licence and Driver CPC qualified!

MEDICAL, THEORY TRAINING, THEORY TESTS

No longer do you have to ring round doctors trying to get an appointment for a medical. For a one-off discounted fee of £250, an incredible saving you will receive:

  • Medical at the nearest location to you
  • On-line access to learning materials for multiple choice, hazard perception and case studies, including practice tests
  • Theory tests booked on your behalf

Anyone driving professionally must have driver CPC. New entrants to the industry not having acquired rights must pass two tests to achieve this qualification. The first test is carried out at your local theory test centre and compromises a computer based case studies test. This is often knows as Module 2.

Having passed Module 2, the candidate will join us for Module 4 training. The Module 4 test is a practical demonstration test involving safe loading, vehicle safety checks, illegal immigration and drug trafficking. As the vehicle is not moved during this test, the Module 4 can be undertaken before the driving course if this suits your schedule. The Module 4 test takes place at our own private driving centre in Caldicot with our own dedicated examiner.

Candidates who have had driver training elsewhere are welcome to join us for the Module 4 training and test.

The case studies tests is a computer-based exercise. There are seven case studies based on real life situations that drivers are likely to come across in their working life. The aim is to test driver knowledge, and how they put it into practice. Each test is made up of seven case studies, each one with six to eight questions, with a maximum of 50 questions. The case studies test will take about 90 minutes to complete.

  • Theory training online for Module 2 Case Studies (full 90 days access)
  • Theory tests booked at a centre local to you at a time to suit

CPC Case Studies –

50 questions, 90 minutes, 40 marks to pass

This test takes about half an hour. To pass, you will need to show knowledge and ability in the following areas:

  • Ability to load the vehicle, paying attention to the safety rules and using the vehicle properly
  • Security of the vehicle and its contents
  • Ability to prevent criminality and trafficking in illegal immigrants – for example, what you should do if you have returned to the vehicle after taking a comfort break on a ferry or at a border crossing
  • Ability to assess emergency situations
  • Ability to prevent physical risk
  • Ability to complete a physical walk round vehicle safety check

The test consists of 5 topic areas covering the Driver CPC syllabus. To pass each topic, drivers will have to score a minimum of 15 out of a possible 20 points in each topic area. However, to pass the test, a higher score in the topics is required because the minimum total score required is 80 out of 100.

Once both tests have been successfully passed you will receive your Driver Qualification card valid for 5 years from the DVSA.
